Overcoming Natural Eyelid Aging with Blepharoplasty

Older couple discussing eyelid surgery in Tucson, AZ

Cataracts, macular degeneration, blurry vision—many of us are all too familiar with the effects aging can have on our eyes. However, what many people don’t realize is that our eyelids are just as susceptible to change over time. I perform blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) at my Tucson, Arizona, practice to overcome these issues.

In this blog post, I’d like to discuss what happens when our eyelids age, how these changes affect our appearance, and why men and women alike turn to eyelid surgery for help.

Eyelid Aging Characteristics

Our eyes are arguably our most prominent facial features, but the area surrounding the eyes are often among the first to display signs of aging. The skin around the area is especially thin and delicate, meaning it’s more susceptible to visible degeneration.

Aesthetic Concerns

Sagging or drooping in the eyelids is a very common concern when it comes to aging eyes. Over time, our eyelids naturally become weighed down and develop a tired, worn-out appearance. Lines and wrinkles also become apparent, especially along the outer corners.

The lower eyelids age a bit differently. In addition to deflating or wrinkling, this area often collects fat deposits, leading to the buildup of bags and puffiness under the eyes.

Functional Concerns

Age-related changes to the eyelids aren’t only cosmetic. Drooping eyelids may actually impede your peripheral vision when they sag low enough. Patients who choose blepharoplasty sometimes report improved peripheral vision after the procedure.

What Blepharoplasty Does

While the facelift is maybe the most well-known anti-aging procedure, it doesn’t really address the eye area. That’s where blepharoplasty can make a difference—often as an enhancement performed during the same surgery.

The blepharoplasty procedure is designed to restore a more youthful appearance to the upper and lower eyelids. The procedure consists of removing or repositioning fat deposits within the eyelids, tightening surrounding muscles, and removing excess skin. The surgery can also help improve the symmetry of eyelids.

Before your procedure, we’ll walk through before-and-after photos with you to give you an idea of what your results will look like. We’ll also discuss your medical history and current health status to determine if you’re a candidate, as it’s not safe to perform the surgery on people with certain eye conditions.

We typically hide eyelid surgery incisions in natural folds within the upper eyelid or along the lower lash line. After your procedure, you may experience some swelling or bruising for about 7 to 10 days.

Your Blepharoplasty Results

Though nothing can stop the aging process completely, eyelid surgery results are typically long-lasting. It’s very rare for someone to need a second procedure. A healthy diet, exercise, and consistent sunscreen use will help extend your results for as long as possible.
