‘That’s My Nose?’—How Zoom Is Changing Our Self-Perception

Rarely have we as a society spent more time staring at ourselves. It started with selfies and social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and, more recently, Tik Tok. The trend accelerated with the pandemic, as men and women suddenly found themselves participating in Zoom meetings and happy hours via FaceTime. Judging by the increased interest in aesthetic surgery, it’s safe to say looking at ourselves so much is a bit unnerving.

What may have seemed like a minor imperfection now has you considering rhinoplasty (nose job). Our Tucson practice is seeing an uptick in patients concerned about the appearance of their necks and wanting facial plastic surgery to do away with jowls. Zoom can be unforgiving.

In this blog post, we’ll describe the way women and men are trying to look their best working or socializing from home via conference calls, including do-it-yourself contouring, nonsurgical treatments, and cosmetic surgery procedures.

Putting Your Best Face Forward

The features that seem to stand out during online calls are the nose, the chin and neck, and the lips. We offer a number of procedures that can address the concerns patients have.

Rhinoplasty: Sitting close to the laptop camera tends to amplify the size of the nose and may draw attention to its shape or a dorsal hump. The popularity of makeup nose jobs (more about those in a bit) is evidence that people believe noses are an important part of their overall attractiveness. As a facial plastic surgery specialist, Dr. Olson is recognized for his rhinoplasty expertise and has been invited to speak at national and international conferences on the procedure. You can see the types of results he produces by viewing our gallery of before-and-after photos of his patients.

Facelift: In a competitive job market, presenting a youthful, energetic appearance is important. Many patients we’ve seen at our practice in the COVID-19 era say they’re a bit taken aback by how old they appear during video conference calls. Age and gravity combine to sabotage the elasticity of our skin and underlying tissue, leading to jowls and saggy neck skin. A facelift performed by a specialist repositions the muscle and tissue and re-drapes the skin so it looks smooth but not unnaturally tight.

Lip fillers: Overly filled lips—often described as “duck lips”—is not the goal for patients seeking lip augmentation in Tucson. Precisely injecting lips with a filler such as JUVÉDERM gives them a plumper, more sensuous appearance that looks natural. Lip enhancement with fillers is popular among patients of all ages.

Makeup nose jobs: Sometimes called “at-home nose jobs” in viral YouTube videos, the DIY nose contouring technique using makeup can come through in a pinch if you’ve got an especially important meeting scheduled. It’s best to do some research and some test runs beforehand to avoid untimely mistakes.

Other nonsurgical treatments, including BOTOX® Cosmetic injections or laser skin rejuvenation, can also help refresh your appearance with little or no downtime.
