What Is Laser Skin Rejuvenation?

"Laser skin rejuvenation" is a rather broad term that refers to any procedure using laser energy to aesthetically improve the skin. Different laser devices address different issues and work in different ways. In our practice, we use the Sandstone Matrix Fractional CO2 laser. This highly targeted, micro ablative laser is a gentle option that effectively promotes the development of collagen, a natural protein that firms and smooths the skin.

Keep in mind that each patient is unique and your results may vary.

How Laser Skin Rejuvenation Works

Our Matrix Fractional CO2 laser emits light pulses that make many small, micro-channels in the skin. The word "fractional" indicates that the laser's energy is broken into very thin, individual columns, leaving patches of untreated skin between the treated skin. Fractional laser treatment helps the skin to heal faster and creates noticeable results without aggressively ablating the skin.

Are You a Candidate?

Laser rejuvenation can successfully treat many aesthetic concerns while still being gentle enough for use on various skin types. You might be a good candidate for laser treatment if you have any of the following concerns:

  • Fine lines and mild to moderate wrinkles
  • Sun damage, including dark spots
  • Textural irregularities
  • Acne scars

Your Treatment Experience

We administer treatments with our Matrix Fractional CO2 laser here in our office, and the procedure is relatively brief and comfortable. Our skin care specialist will first cleanse your skin to prepare it for treatment. Next, the physician moves the laser handpiece across your skin as it emits pulses of laser energy. Patients typically report experiencing a sensation of warmth, tingling, or stinging. The procedure lasts for about 30 minutes.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation Recovery and Results

After your treatment we apply a special moisturizer to help soothe your skin as it heals. You many notice redness, swelling, and peeling for up to 1 week. It's important to keep your skin moisturized and protected from the sun during this time. It can take several weeks of healing for your results to fully develop.

To achieve the complete look you desire, you may need a series of several treatments, depending on the specific nature of your condition. In the long term, your results can last for years, especially if you protect your skin from the sun and refrain from smoking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Matrix Fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing compare to microdermabrasion?

The Matrix Fractional CO2 laser treats acne and acne scarring, as well as more advanced signs of aging. The Matrix Fractional CO2 laser also can stimulate collagen production to prevent facial sagging. Microdermabrasion primarily treats minor skin imperfections and early signs of aging. Some of our patients combine fractional CO2 laser and microdermabrasion treatments, and protect and nourish their smoother skin with medical skin care products.

How does the Matrix Fractional CO2 laser compare with injectable fillers and treatments?

Fractional CO2 lasers are designed to treat mild to moderate wrinkling caused by the natural aging process and exposure to the elements. BOTOX® Cosmetic treats wrinkles caused by repeated facial movement, which results in forehead lines, crow's feet, and wrinkles between the brows. Injectable fillers create volume in depressed facial areas, such as hollowed cheeks, and in skin folds, such as nasolabial folds (smile lines). During the initial consultation you'll learn more about your particular types of wrinkles and appropriate treatment options.
