Choosing Ear Surgery

Ear surgery reshapes the ears for a more balanced appearance. Through tiny incisions made behind the ear, Dr. Olson reshapes and removes cartilage to:

  • “Trim down” oversized ears
  • Bring distant ears closer to the head
  • Reconstruct ears that are misshapen or malformed.

Earlobe Reduction

As we age as a result of natural changes in ear shape lobes can elongate. This is probably accentuated in women by wearing heavy curettings over her lifetime. The result is that the earlobe no longer supports and tearing in a natural position and this bothers many people. Fortunately, a more normal position of the earlobe could be achieved through earlobe reduction. This procedure can be performed in the office under local anesthesia with sutures being removed within 5 days of the procedure.

Dr. Olson combines his artistic talent and advanced experience to provide permanent enhancement for the ears. His otoplasty patients also have another advantage: he is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon who has the skill to perform many other facial plastic surgery procedures, including rhinoplasty, in Tucson.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will happen at my consultation?

During consultation with Dr. Olson, you will learn about the ears, and the surgical technique that’s most appropriate for you or your child. You can review before and after photos of patients who had similar concerns. You will also learn about anesthesia options and any steps you need to take prior to surgery. Dr. Olson will give you plenty of time to ask any questions you have so that you can make a well-informed decision.

What type of anesthesia will be used for the procedure?

Many adults select local anesthesia for the procedure. Children are often better served by general anesthesia, allowing them to be completely asleep during the procedure. Patients will not feel discomfort during surgery.

What can I expect from my otoplasty recovery?

Dr. Olson will provide adults and children with post-surgical instructions to help make the most of recovery time and create attractive results. He is available to answer any questions that may come up along the way. Patients will need to allow 7 to 10 days for rest, giving any swelling and bruising time to subside. Discomfort in the first day or so can be relieved with pain medication. Exercise and sports activities should be avoided for a few weeks thereafter until the ears have fully healed.
