Hair loss is far more common than you might imagine, and it affects both men and women. While patients have many options for hair restoration, the professionals at Foothills Dermatology & Facial Plastic Surgery use PRP therapy for hair loss in Tucson, AZ, to help people from Green Valley, Sierra Vista, Saddlebrooke, and Sahuarita restore thick, healthy hair. This therapy encourages the growth of your own hair, without surgery.

Short for platelet-rich plasma, PRP is a vital component of human blood. When used in medical and cosmetic indications, your own blood plasma is used to minimize risk and complications. At Foothills Dermatology in Tucson, we use PRP for skin rejuvenation as well as hair restoration. Blood platelets contain a variety of nourishing ingredients, including growth factors, which, when applied to the scalp, can stimulate activity and growth in hair follicles.

PRP for hair restoration is a good option for people in the earlier stages of hair loss or for those who simply those who want to fill in areas of thinness. For more advanced cases of baldness, our patients may benefit from hair transplantation with NeoGraft® follicular unit extraction or a more traditional scalp excision. It’s also important that you be in generally good health and have no blood conditions that would make the procedure unsafe.
PRP for hair restoration begins with a standard blood draw. Once enough blood has been collected, it’s processed in a special device that separates the blood plasma from the other components of the blood.
Meanwhile, your provider prepares your scalp for treatment. Typically, we apply a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable, although the procedure is not known to be highly painful. Your provider injects the plasma into your scalp using a small needle. Because of the previously applied local anesthetic, the PRP injections should be painless. Dr. Olson minimizes the number of injections needed by using the subdermal depo bolus injection technique, which allows the PRP to spread from the injection site.
You can expect to be in our office for less than an hour, and there’s no need to refrain from any of your usual daily activities after treatment. While you may feel some lingering tenderness, it’s safe to return to work and get right back to your regular routine.
Most patients require more than 1 treatment to create the results they want. Depending on your needs, we may recommend up to 4 treatments, each spaced about 1 month apart.
Unlike after hair transplant surgery, most patients do not experience “shedding” after PRP treatments.
The results of PRP for hair restoration are not instant, but they can be dramatic. Most patients see their initial results develop after a few months, with full results appreciable by the 6-month mark.
Results from PRP last at least a year. After your initial treatment cycle, you may wish to undergo routine maintenance treatments annually to hold on to your results.
