IPL photofacials use light energy to encourage skin rejuvenation from within. During the procedure, intense pulses of light gently penetrate the skin without harming its surface, heating up and breaking apart concentrated pigment in brown spots. For vascular areas, the light energy heats pigment in red blood cells, causing the blood vessels to collapse and gradually be absorbed. These treatments are best suited for skin that is not suntanned.
We perform photofacials in our office. First the skin is cleansed and a topical anesthetic cream is applied to reduce discomfort. After the skin is numb, which takes approximately an hour, the skin is cleansed again and eye protection is put in place. Next a cooling gel is applied to the skin. Quick pulses of light are emitted as the handpiece is slowly run over targeted areas. The IPL machine can be adjusted to a gentle setting for delicate areas.
In most cases, the coloring of the skin improves gradually with successive treatments. More than one session spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart is usually required. Periodic follow-up treatments help maintain the benefits.

Learn MoreDuring your consultation, your skin will be evaluated to identify candidacy for the procedure. You will learn about the IPL Photofacial treatment process as well as other cosmetic treatments that can help maximize skin health and beauty. Even though the IPL Photofacial is relatively comfortable and does not require downtime, you will receive instructions to help ensure a smooth recovery and beautiful results.
As part of your consultation, we’ll develop a personalized plan for your skin. Other cosmetic procedures may be an alternative or adjunct to treatment, including skin rejuvenation procedures and treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic or injectable fillers.
Benefits can be achieved in one IPL treatment. Additional sessions accomplish both this and the maintenance of results.
Experiences vary after IPL, based on the intensity of treatment, the sensitivity of your skin, and other individual factors. Right after your treatment, the skin may look and feel like it’s sunburnt — warm and pink — for a few hours. Brown pigment gradually darkens and collects together under the skin, resembling coffee grounds. This effect is sometimes called “peppering” and sloughs off over the next week or 2.
Redness usually fades gradually as the treated blood vessels shrink and are absorbed. Because the surface of this skin usually is not impacted, it is safe to apply camouflage makeup during this process. Be sure to minimize sun exposure and use a good sunscreen whenever you go out.
You can enjoy more beautiful skin with the help of the advanced technology available at our practice.
